Developing the Essay. In an essay where each section of the magnetic thin thesis, paper is developed by several paragraphs, it is important to a person essay, allow your topic sentences to organize a section of the paper. What follows is thin film a sample of how you would write the topic sentences for the eight paragraphs of the essay: Paragraph 1 : Tom feels unhappiness at his entrapment because he longs for adventure and involvement in the important events of his time and de feels anger at the guilt he feels for wanting to leave, which he focuses on about maya, his mother. Paragraph 2 : His frustration at not being able to follow his dreams easily becomes anger at the guilt he feels for wanting to leave, which he focuses on his mother. Paragraph 4 : Though we primarily see his pity for Amanda in his insistence as narrator that she be seen with dignity, the how write an essay, pity he feels for Laura seems clear in the gentle and sympathetic way he treats her. Paragraph 5 : Overriding any individual pity he feels for either character is the pity he feels at their entrapment for they, unlike him, have no way out. Paragraph 6 : Tom’s conflict between these two emotions helps us understand one of the themes of the play: that sometimes any decision we make has painful consequences, in Tom’s case, staying or going.

In the section on outlining above, I only outlined the essay down to the topic sentence. A common mistake that student make in writing literary analysis is explaining too little of their logic and thin thesis thoughts, assuming that the reader knows more about the a person to admire essay, work that the magnetic film, writer. Yet, when the very same student sits in literature teacher’s class, she expects the teacher to explain the work fully, without assuming that the student understands much of anything. A good literary analysis needs to how write introduction, explain in the same way, using the same sort of logic and examples, that a student would expect a good teacher to use. Let’s take the first topic sentence outlined above: Tom feels unhappiness in his entrapment because he longs for adventure and involvement in the important events of magnetic thin film, his time . Before you even begin looking for evidence to prove your point, it’s important to explain you topic sentence. One way to figure out what needs to be explained in to imagine what question an interested listener would ask you based on your topic sentence. My interested reader would want to know, “Why does his longing to take part in the interesting things going on in the world make him so unhappy?” It’s okay (although unnecessary) to state the question in the paragraph if it helps keep you focused.

Then, based on your own understanding of the the void, character, without referring to anything specific in thin, the play yet, you simply talk the answer. Tom feels unhappiness in his entrapment because he longs for adventure and research paper pregnacy involvement in film, the important events on his time.. Why does his longing to take part in the interesting things going on in the world make him so unhappy? We know that he is a poet from what he tells us in his first speech, and poets typically are sensitive, romantic, and idealistic. The setting of the play, which Tom emphasizes, is during primarily with surviving while Europeans, particularly the Spanish, were involved in idealistic struggles for freedom and essay human rights. Try to keep in mind that you are the expert on magnetic thin film thesis, what you have to a person essay, say. Paraphrases and Quotations.

Having written the thin thesis, topic sentence and explained it, now it is time to find evidence from the play to back up the explanation. You can either paraphrase a passage from the work or you can quote directly. If you paraphrase, you tell in in social research, your own words something specific from the work. For might want to refer to thin film thesis, Tom’s father’s departure in a specific way without quoting the passage directly. Thus, a paraphrase might be: Like his father before him who was a telephone operator who fell in love with long distances, he also wants to cover long distances in a person essay, his own life. Though technically paraphrases are a particular incident in a play; it’s much easier to supply a general plot summary, thinking that you are paraphrasing when you are not. You are only paraphrasing if you are taking a specific number of lines out of work and rewording them in your own voice.

In addition to film, paraphrase as example, you can also directly quote from the how write, primary source (the piece of literature you are writing about). Magnetic Film. There are two kinds of essays about angelou, direct quotation: block and magnetic thesis run-in. A block quotation is used when you are quoting more than three lines. A block quotation (1) is indented five spaces on touching the void essay, the left margin; (2) lacks quotation marks; and (3) places the end punctuation before the parenthetical page citation. You should use block quotations rarely because it you quote a large passage of a work in magnetic thin thesis, your paper, you are also obligated to spend adequate time interpreting the passage you quoted. A run-in quotation is used when quoting less than three lines. Technology Bad For Society. You can quote a piece of a sentence, a full sentence or several short sentences in a run-in quotation. A run-in quotation (1) in incorporated into the text of your essay; (2) separated from the essay with quotation marks; and (3) places the thin, end punctuation of the sentence after the parenthetical page citation. You can find examples of both kinds of quotation in the following paragraph: Tom feels unhappiness in his entrapment because he longs for adventure and involvement in the important events of his time.

Why does his longing to take part in the interesting things going on in the world make him so unhappy? We know that he is a poet from touching what he tells us in his first speech, and poets typically are sensitive, romantic, and idealistic. The setting of the play, which Tom emphasizes, is during the 1930s when the people of the United States , in the middle of the Depression, concerned themselves primarily with surviving while Europeans, particularly the Spanish, were involved in idealistic struggles for magnetic thin thesis, freedom and human rights. Tom compares what’s going on in America with what’s happening in the rest of the world in his first speech to the audience. He characterizes the touching essay, Depression as a time “when the huge middle class of America was matriculating in a school for the blind. Their eyes had failed them, or they had failed their eyes, and so they were having their fingers pressed forcibly down on the fiery Braille alphabet of a dissolving economy” (957). The language he uses suggests contempt for the ineptitude of the magnetic thin thesis, Americans, who were suffering from a mess they had made themselves from their blindness and who lacked enough awareness to realize their own mistakes and were having to be taught, forcibly, and brutally.

He says moments later, “In Spain there was revolution. Here there was only shouting and confusion” (957). “Elsewhere, people who saw undesirable circumstances were working vigorously to change them; here, people were too unfocused and bad for essay confused to do more than complain. Magnetic Thin. Later on maya angelou, in the play, to the music of “All the World is Waiting for film thesis, the Sunrise ,” he contrasts once mote the imminent disaster in Europe with the bad for essay, superficial coping devices around him. Commenting on the activities at the Paradise Dance Hall across the alley, Tom notes the couples who sneak out into the alley to magnetic thin film, kiss do so as “compensation for lives that passed like mine, without any change or adventure” (973). Touching Essay. Tom sees all the rest of the world “waiting for magnetic film thesis, bombardments” while those around him sedate themselves with “hot swing music and in social liquor, dance halls, bars, and thesis movies, and sex that hung in the gloom like a chandelier and in social flooded the world with grief, deceptive rainbows” (973).

His desire to join the Merchant Marines certainly comes strongly from his awareness that changes are taking place in the world that will affect the world for years to come. Like his father before him who was a telephone operator who fell in love with long distances, he also wants to cover long distances in his own life. He wants to be a part of film thesis, those changes. Ironically, of course, leaving doesn’t guarantee escape from his entrapment. In his concluding speech, he talks about how on touching the void essay, can feel trapped even when running free:

I didn’t go to the moon, I went much further. I traveled around a great deal. The cities swept out me like dead leaves, leaves that were brightly colored but torn away from the branches. I would have stopped, but I was pursued by something….Oh, Laura, Laura, I tried to thesis, leave you behind me, but I am more faithful than I intended to be! (1000) No matter what Tom does, he feels trapped, both by his own needs and desires and by technology society essay his love for his family. Magnetic Thin Film Thesis. The lure of the world becomes empty, like dead leaves, beautiful but unnaturally taken from their branches.

Ultimately, Tom cannot be happy, no matter what he chooses. You should supply several direct quotations to support every assertion you make. Every quotation must be introduced, meaning that before you quote you should make clear (1) why you are quoting these lines and (2) in what context in the original work these quotations occurred. Ideally, your essay should make sense to someone intelligent who has not read the how write, primary source. What follows is an example of a paragraph where the quotations are inadequately introduced. Unless you know the poem already, it’s a hard paragraph to follow:

In all of these poems, the speakers are self-deceived and thin film deceitful. Shakespeare’s “When my love swears she is made of truth” shows a couple deceiving each other and to admire essay themselves. Magnetic Film. They know their relationship is based on paper teenage pregnacy, lies. “I do believe her though I know she lies” (2). He pretends to believe her to insure her cooperation so that he can continue to use her. She deceives herself and him when the magnetic film thesis, poem says, “That she might think me some untutored youth/Unlearned in the world’s false subtleties” (2-3). She pretends he is younger than he really is, so that she can ensure his cooperation. Maya Angelou. They lie to magnetic thin thesis, each other in order to keep the relationship together. They want to believe these lies because it keeps them happy. “Therefore I lie with her and how write an essay she with me/ And in our faults by lies we flattered be” (13-14). Thin Film. They believe the other one believes their lies and that their lying relationship is a trusting one. Research Pregnacy. “Oh, love’s best habit is in seeming trust” (11).

Their love comes from deceiving one another. The mistake in this paragraph is that the student assumes that the reader is a familiar with the poem as the student is. Always, always, always introduce your quotations by giving enough of the context of the work so that the reader does not necessarily have to have read it. Here is the same paragraph with the quotations introduced more completely: In all of these poems, the speakers are self-deceived and deceitful. Shakespeare’s “When my love swears she is made of film, truth” shows a couple deceiving each other and themselves. They know their relationship is society based on lies. Magnetic Film Thesis. In the very first line of the poem, the speaker tells us that when his girlfriend swears that she is faithful to him, “I do believe her though I know she lies” (2). He pretends to believe her to bad for essay, ensure her cooperation so that he can continue to thin film, use her.

But he has yet an even more complicated reason for believing her lies to him; only a very young and nave man would believe her story, since it is a person essay apparently so transparent, so by claiming to believe her, he presents himself to her as younger than he really is. He believes her lies so “That she might think me some untutored youth/ Unlearned in thin thesis, the world’s false subtleties” (2-3). She, of course, knows his real age, so she is pretending he is younger than he really is, so that she can ensure his cooperation. They lie to each other in order to keep the relationship together. They want to believe these lies because it keeps them happy. At the end of the a person to admire essay, poem, having made clear that the man and the women are both lying to film, one another and are clearly aware that they are being lied to, the speaker sums up the the void, ultimate reason behind the falsehood: ”Therefore I lie with her and she with me/ And in our faults by lies we flattered be” (13-14). Out of individual vanity, they believe the other one believes their lies and that their lying relationship is a trusting one. “Oh, love’s best habit is in seeming trust” (11).

Their love, as self-serving and questionable as it is, comes from thin thesis deceiving one another. Notice how the transition words introducing the quotation help place the touching essay, quotation in magnetic film, the context of the research essay, larger poem. Notice also how the last sentence provides an opinion or interpretation of the topic sentence. All examples must be properly introduced. Miscellaneous Details About Quotation Usage and Paper Writing. 1. Magnetic Thin Film Thesis. 1. Only quote the material that you need to prove your point. My siblings arguing, the dog barking, the phone ringing—all meant my house was functioning normally. Magnetic Thin Film? My Dad, a retired Navy pilot, was away half the about, time. Magnetic Thin Thesis? When he was home, he had a parenting style something like a drill sergeant. At the age of nine, I learned how to to admire, clear burning oil from the surface of magnetic thin film water. My Dad considered this a critical life skill—you know, in case my aircraft carrier should ever get torpedoed. “The water’s on fire! Clear a hole!” he shouted, tossing me in the lake without warning. While I’m still unconvinced about that particular lesson’s practicality, my Dad’s overarching message is bad for society unequivocally true: much of life is unexpected, and you have to deal with the twists and turns. Living in my family, days rarely unfolded as planned. A bit overlooked, a little pushed around, I learned to roll with reality, negotiate a quick deal, and give the improbable a try.

I don’t sweat the small stuff, and I definitely don’t expect perfect fairness. So what if our dining room table only has six chairs for magnetic thin film thesis, seven people? Someone learns the importance of punctuality every night. But more than punctuality and a special affinity for musical chairs, my family life has taught me to thrive in situations over which I have no power. Growing up, I never controlled my older siblings, but I learned how to thwart their attempts to control me. I forged alliances, and realigned them as necessary. Sometimes, I was the poor, defenseless little brother; sometimes I was the omniscient elder. Different things to in social research, different people, as the situation demanded. I learned to adapt. Back then, these techniques were merely reactions undertaken to ensure my survival.

But one day this fall, Dr. Hicks, our Head of School, asked me a question that he hoped all seniors would reflect on throughout the magnetic thin thesis, year: “How can I participate in a thing I do not govern, in essays angelou the company of people I did not choose?” The question caught me off guard, much like the question posed to me in magnetic thin thesis Laredo. Then, I realized I knew the in social research, answer. I knew why the coat hanger had been handed to magnetic thin film, me. Growing up as the society, middle child in film thesis my family, I was a vital participant in a thing I did not govern, in the company of people I did not choose. How Write Introduction? It’s family. Magnetic Thin Film? It’s society.

And often, it’s chaos. You participate by letting go of the paper pregnacy, small stuff, not expecting order and perfection, and facing the unexpected with confidence, optimism, and thin preparedness. Society Essay? My family experience taught me to thesis, face a serendipitous world with confidence. It's very helpful to take writing apart in order to see just how it accomplishes its objectives. Stephen's essay is introduction very effective. Let's find out why! An Opening Line That Draws You In. I had never broken into a car before.

In just eight words, we get: scene-setting (he is magnetic film standing next to a car about to break in), the idea of in social essay crossing a boundary (he is maybe about to do an illegal thing for magnetic film thesis, the first time), and a cliffhanger (we are thinking: is he going to get caught? Is he headed for a life of crime? Is he about to be scared straight?). We were in Laredo, having just finished our first day at a Habitat for introduction, Humanity work site. Magnetic Thin Film? The Hotchkiss volunteers had already left, off to enjoy some Texas BBQ, leaving me behind with the college kids to clean up. Not until we were stranded did we realize we were locked out how write introduction of the van. Someone picked a coat hanger out of the dumpster, handed it to me, and took a few steps back.

“Can you do that thing with a coat hanger to unlock it?” “Why me?” I thought. More out of amusement than optimism, I gave it a try. I slid the thin film thesis, hanger into the window’s seal like I’d seen on crime shows, and an essay spent a few minutes jiggling the apparatus around the inside of the frame. It’s the details that really make this small experience come alive. Notice how whenever he can, Stephen uses a more specific, descriptive word in place of a more generic one. The volunteers aren’t going to get food or dinner; they’re going for magnetic thin thesis, “Texas BBQ.” The coat hanger comes from “a dumpster.” Stephen doesn’t just move the coat hanger—he “jiggles” it. Details also help us visualize the emotions of the people in the scene. An Essay? The person who hands Stephen the coat hanger isn’t just uncomfortable or nervous; he “takes a few steps back”—a description of movement that conveys feelings. Finally, the detail of actual speech makes the magnetic thin thesis, scene pop.

Instead of research writing that the other guy asked him to unlock the van, Stephen has the guy actually say his own words in a way that sounds like a teenager talking. Coat hangers: not just for crows' nests any more! (Gotz/Wikimedia) Turning a Specific Incident Into a Deeper Insight. Suddenly, two things simultaneously clicked. One was the magnetic, lock on the door. (I actually succeeded in technology society essay springing it.) The other was the realization that I’d been in this type of situation before. In fact, I’d been born into film this type of situation.

Not only does Stephen make the locked car experience a meaningful illustration of how he has learned to be resourceful and ready for anything, but he also makes this turn from the specific to the broad through an elegant play on the two meanings of the word “click.” Using Concrete Examples When Making Abstract Claims. My upbringing has numbed me to unpredictability and an essay introduction chaos. With a family of seven, my home was loud, messy, and spottily supervised. My siblings arguing, the dog barking, the phone ringing—all meant my house was functioning normally. “Unpredictability and magnetic thin thesis chaos” are very abstract, not easily visualized concepts. In Social Research? Not only that, but they could mean any number of things—violence, abandonment, poverty, mental instability. By instantly following up with highly finite and unambiguous illustrations like “family of thin seven” and “siblings arguing, the dog barking, the pregnacy, phone ringing,” Stephen grounds the abstraction in something that is easy to picture: a large, noisy family.

Using Small Bits of Humor and Casual Word Choice. My Dad, a retired Navy pilot, was away half the time. When he was home, he had a parenting style something like a drill sergeant. At the age of magnetic thin film thesis nine, I learned how to clear burning oil from the surface of water. My Dad considered this a critical life skill—you know, in case my aircraft carrier should ever get torpedoed. Obviously, knowing how to clean burning oil is not high on the list of touching the void things every 9-year-old needs to thin film, know. Touching Essay? To emphasize this, Stephen uses sarcasm by bringing up a situation that is magnetic thesis clearly over-the-top: “in case my aircraft carrier should ever get torpedoed.” The humor also feels relaxed.

Part of this is because he introduces it with the colloquial phrase “you know,” so it sounds like he is talking to us in person. This approach also diffuses the potential discomfort of the reader with his father’s strictness—since he is making jokes about research teenage it, clearly he is OK. Thin Film Thesis? Notice, though, that this doesn’t occur very much in the essay. This helps keep the tone meaningful and serious rather than flippant. Mr. President? There's been an oil spill! Then I want our best elementary school students on it, STAT. An Ending That Stretches the maya angelou, Insight Into the Future. But one day this fall, Dr. Hicks, our Head of School, asked me a question that he hoped all seniors would reflect on magnetic thin film throughout the year: “How can I participate in a thing I do not govern, in the company of people I did not choose?”

The question caught me off guard, much like the question posed to me in Laredo. Then, I realized I knew the answer. I knew why the essay, coat hanger had been handed to me. Growing up as the middle child in my family, I was a vital participant in a thing I did not govern, in the company of people I did not choose. It’s family. It’s society. And often, it’s chaos. You participate by magnetic thin film letting go of the small stuff, not expecting order and perfection, and facing the unexpected with confidence, optimism, and preparedness. How Write? My family experience taught me to face a serendipitous world with confidence. The ending of the essay reveals that Stephen’s life has been one long preparation for the future.

He has emerged from chaos and his dad’s approach to parenting as a person who can thrive in a world that he can’t control. This connection of past experience to current maturity and self-knowledge is a key element in all successful personal essays. Magnetic Film Thesis? Colleges are very much looking for about maya, mature, self-aware applicants. These are the qualities of successful college students, who will be able to navigate the thin film, independence college classes require and essay the responsibility and quasi-adulthood of college life. What Could This Essay Do Even Better?

Even the best essays aren't perfect, and even the world's greatest writers will tell you that writing is never finished—just due. So what would we tweak in this essay if we could? Replace some of the magnetic thin film, cliched language. Stephen uses handy phrases like twists and ethics in social research turns and don’t sweat the small stuff as a kind of film thesis shorthand for explaining his relationship to chaos and unpredictability. But using too many of these ready-made expressions runs the risk of clouding out maya your own voice and replacing it with something expected and boring. Use another example from recent life. Magnetic Thin Thesis? Stephen's first example (breaking into the van in Laredo) is a great illustration of being resourceful in a person to admire essay an unexpected situation.

But his essay also emphasizes that he learned to adapt by being different things to different people. It would be great to see how this plays out outside his family, either in the situation in Laredo or another context. Example #2: By Bridget Collins, Tufts Class of '19 (Common App Essay, 608 words long) I have always loved riding in cars. After a long day in magnetic thin first grade, I used to fall asleep to the engine purring in my mother's Honda Odyssey, even though it was only a 5-minute drive home. As I grew, and graduated into ethics the shotgun seat, it became natural and enjoyable to look out the window. Seeing my world passing by through that smudged glass, I would daydream what I could do with it. In elementary school, I already knew my career path: I was going to be Emperor of the World. While I sat in the car and magnetic thin thesis watched the miles pass by, I developed the plan for my empire.

I reasoned that, for a person essay, the world to run smoothly, it would have to look presentable. Thin? I would assign people, aptly named Fixer-Uppers, to an essay, fix everything that needed fixing. That old man down the street with chipping paint on his house would have a fresh coat in no time. Magnetic Thin Film Thesis? The boy who accidentally tossed his Frisbee onto the roof of the school would get it back. The big pothole on essay Elm Street that my mother managed to magnetic thesis, hit every single day on the way to school would be filled-in. A Person To Admire Essay? It made perfect sense! All the people that didn't have a job could be Fixer-Uppers. I was like a ten-year-old FDR. Seven years down the magnetic thin film, road, I still take a second glance at the sidewalk cracks and think of research teenage my Fixer-Uppers, but now I'm doing so from the driver's seat. Magnetic Thin Thesis? As much as I would enjoy it, I now accept that I won't become Emperor of the World, and the void that the Fixer-Uppers will have to remain in magnetic thin thesis my car ride imaginings.

Or do they? I always pictured a Fixer-Upper as a smiling man in an orange T-Shirt. Maybe instead, a Fixer-Upper could be a tall girl with a deep love for an essay introduction, Yankee Candles. Maybe it could be me. Bridget the Fixer-Upper will be slightly different than the imaginary one who paints houses and fetches Frisbees. I was lucky enough to discover what I am passionate about when I was a freshman in film high school.

A self-admitted Phys. Ed. addict, I volunteered to help out with the Adapted PE class. How Write Introduction? On my first day, I learned that it was for developmentally-disabled students. Magnetic Thin? To be honest, I was really nervous. I hadn't had too much interaction with special needs students before, and paper teenage wasn't sure how to handle myself around them. Long story short, I got hooked. Three years have passed helping out in APE and eventually becoming a teacher in the Applied Behavior Analysis summer program.

I love working with the students and film thesis watching them progress. When senior year arrived, college meetings began, and my counselor asked me what I wanted to do for a career, I didn't say Emperor of the World. Instead, I told him I wanted to become a board-certified behavior analyst. Bad For Society Essay? A BCBA helps develop learning plans for students with autism and other disabilities. Magnetic Film? Basically, I would get to do what I love for the rest of my life. He laughed and told me that it was a nice change that a seventeen-year-old knew so specifically what she wanted to do. I smiled, thanked him, and bad for society left.

But it occurred to me that, while my desired occupation was decided, my true goal in magnetic thin film life was still to become a Fixer-Upper. So, maybe I'll be like Sue Storm and her alter-ego, the Invisible Woman. I'll do one thing during the day, then spend my off-hours helping people where I can. The Void Essay? Instead of flying like Sue, though, I'll opt for magnetic, a nice performance automobile. My childhood self would appreciate that. Bridget takes a somewhat different approach than Stephen, but her essay is just as detailed and engaging. Let's go through some of the the void, strengths of her essay.

A Structure That’s Easy to Follow and Understand. The essay is arranged chronologically. Bridget starts each paragraph with a clear signpost of where we are in time: Paragraph 1: “after a long day in first grade” Paragraph 2: “in elementary school” Paragraph 3: “seven years down the road” Paragraph 4: “when I was a freshman in high school” Paragraph 5: “when senior year arrived” This keeps the reader oriented without being distracting or gimmicky. I would assign people, aptly named Fixer-Uppers, to fix everything that needed fixing. Magnetic Thesis? That old man down the street with chipping paint on his house would have a fresh coat in no time. The boy who accidentally tossed his Frisbee onto the roof of the school would get it back. Seven years down the research teenage, road, I still take a second glance at the sidewalk cracks and think of my Fixer-Uppers, but now I'm doing so from the driver's seat. Magnetic Film Thesis? As much as I would enjoy it, I now accept that I won't become Emperor of the World, and that the Fixer-Uppers will have to the void essay, remain in magnetic thesis my car ride imaginings.

Or do they? I always pictured a Fixer-Upper as a smiling man in ethics research an orange T-Shirt. Maybe instead, a Fixer-Upper could be a tall girl with a deep love for Yankee Candles. Maybe it could be me. I wanted to become a board-certified behavior analyst. A BCBA helps develop learning plans for students with autism and magnetic thin film other disabilities. Basically, I would get to do what I love for research pregnacy, the rest of my life. …But it occurred to me that, while my desired occupation was decided, my true goal in life was still to become a Fixer-Upper. What makes this essay fun to magnetic thin film thesis, read is that Bridget takes a child’s idea of a world made better through quasi-magical helpers and turns it into a metaphor for ethics in social essay, the author’s future aspirations. It helps that the metaphor is a very clear one: people who work with students with disabilities are making the world better one abstract fix at thin a time, just like imaginary Fixer-Uppers would make the world better one concrete physical fix at a time.

Every childhood Fixer-Upper ever. The Void? Ask your parents to explain the back row to you. (JD Hancock/Flickr) This essay uses many techniques that make Bridget sound genuine and make the reader feel like we already know her. Technique #1: humor. Notice Bridget's gentle and relaxed humor that lightly mocks her younger self’s grand ambitions (this is film different from the more sarcastic kind of humor used by touching essay Stephen in the first essay—you could never mistake one writer for the other). In elementary school, I already knew my career path: I was going to be Emperor of the World. I was like a ten-year-old FDR.

Technique #2: invented terminology. The second technique is the way Bridget coins her own terms, carrying them through the whole essay. It would be easy enough to thin thesis, simply describe the people she imagined in childhood as helpers or assistants, and to simply say that as a child she wanted to rule the world. Paper? Instead, she invents the capitalized (and thus official-sounding) titles “Fixer-Upper” and film “Emperor of the World,” making these childish conceits at once charming and iconic. What's also key is that the titles feed into essay the central metaphor of the essay, which keeps them from sounding like strange quirks that don’t go anywhere. Technique #3: playing with syntax. Magnetic Thin Film? The third technique is to use sentences of varying length, syntax, and structure. Most of the essay's written in standard English and uses grammatically correct sentences. However, at teenage pregnacy key moments, Bridget emphasizes that the magnetic thin film thesis, reader needs to sit up and pay attention by switching to ethics in social essay, short, colloquial, differently punctuated, and sometimes fragmented sentences. The big pothole on thin Elm Street that my mother managed to bad for society, hit every single day on magnetic thin film the way to a person to admire essay, school would be filled-in.

It made perfect sense! All the people that didn't have a job could be Fixer-Uppers. When she is narrating her childhood thought process, the sudden short sentence “It made perfect sense!” (especially its exclamation point) is basically the essay version of drawing a light bulb turning on over someone’s head. As much as I would enjoy it, I now accept that I won't become Emperor of the World, and that the Fixer-Uppers will have to magnetic thin film, remain in my car ride imaginings. Or do they? Similarly, when the essays about maya angelou, essay turns from her childhood imagination to her present-day aspirations, the turn is thin thesis marked with “Or do they?”—a tiny and technology arresting half-sentence question. Maybe instead, a Fixer-Upper could be a tall girl with a deep love for thin film, Yankee Candles.

Maybe it could be me. The first time when the comparison between magical fixer-upper’s and the future disability specialist is made is when Bridget turns her metaphor onto herself. The essay emphasizes the touching essay, importance of the moment through repetition (two sentences structured similarly, both starting with the word “maybe”) and the use of a very short sentence: “Maybe it could be me.” To be honest, I was really nervous. I hadn't had too much interaction with special needs students before, and wasn't sure how to handle myself around them. Long story short, I got hooked.

The last key moment that gets the magnetic thin film, small-sentence treatment is the emotional crux of the a person, essay. As we watch Bridget go from nervously trying to help disabled students to thin film, falling in love with this specialty field, she undercuts the potential sappiness of the moment by relying on changed-up sentence length and ethics in social slang: “Long story short, I got hooked.” The best essays convey emotions just as clearly as this image. What Could This Essay Do Even Better? Bridget's essay is very strong, but there are still a few little things that could be improved. Explain the car connection better.

The essay begins and ends with Bridget's enjoying a car ride, but this doesn't seem to be related either to magnetic thin, the Fixer-Upper idea or to the void essay, her passion for working with special-needs students. It would be great to either connect this into the essay more, or to take it out altogether and film thesis create more space for something else. Give more details about being a teacher in the Applied Behavior Analysis summer program. It makes perfect sense that Bridget doesn't want to put her students on display. It would take the to admire essay, focus off of her and thin film possibly read as offensive or condescending. But, rather than saying long story short, maybe she could elaborate on her own feelings here a bit more. What is it about this kind of teaching that she loves? What is technology bad for society she hoping to bring to the lives of her future clients? 3 Essential Tips for Writing Your Own Essay.

Investigating magnetisation dynamics in magnetic thin films and micro

conversation essay It's not just the accent that makes New Yorkers different Gotta problem with that? A stroll down memory lane. It’s Not What You Say, It’s the Way That You Say It. Well-known author and sociolinguist Deborah Tannen explains why non-New Yorkers find Big Apple natives so pushy: It may have at least as much to do with their high-energy speech style as their personalities. Thin Thesis? So what’s it to you? (The research cited in this essay was first published in 1981.) One of the nice things about the United States is to admire, that, wherever you go, people speak the film thesis, same language. So native New Yorkers can move to San Francisco, Houston, or Milwaukee and a person still understand and be understood by everyone they meet.

Right? Well, not exactly. Or, as a native New Yorker might put it, “Wrong!” Even though people all over thin film the country speak English, the ways they let others know how they mean what they say—whether they’re being friendly, ironic, or rude—can be very different. Now, I’m not referring to the two aspects of language that everyone notices and a lot of people talk about: accent and vocabulary. Plenty has been said about the New York accent—pronunciation of vowels ( caw fee), consonants ( tree for essays maya, three ), leaving out some r ’s ( toidy-toid street) and putting others in magnetic film thesis (Lind er Ronstadt). Ethics Essay? And much has been said about vocabulary—if you say “dungarees” instead of thin film thesis “jeans”; if you stand “in” line or, as only a New Yorker can do, stand “on” line. But there are other aspects of language that people tend not to notice because they seem so natural—when you start and stop talking; how fast you talk; how you use pitch, loudness, tone of a person to admire essay voice, rhythm; what your “point” is likely to be and how you get to it; what you talk about, when, and to whom. If people do notice these aspects of speech, they don’t attribute them to language habits but to the speaker’s personality—thinking of New Yorkers, for instance, as loud and pushy. How do cultural differences affect the ways people talk and listen? I’m from New York City and of East European Jewish background, and I used to thesis live in in social research essay Berkeley, California, so a lot of the magnetic thin film thesis, conversations I have taped and analyzed involve native New Yorkers talking to Californians.

I found out that New York Jews have ways of talking that often have one effect (a good one) when used with one another and another effect (not so good) when used with others. Of course, some New Yorkers who are not of East European Jewish background talk this way, and how write an essay introduction so do people who are neither from New York nor Jewish. But there are many who do—enough to account for the negative stereotype, and enough for many people, when I talk about these phenomena, to react with a very loud “AHA!” and thin thesis a sigh of relief, saying this explains something that’s been giving them trouble for a long time. New Yorkers seem to in social research think the best thing two people can do is magnetic, talk. Research? Silence is okay when you’re watching a movie (though it might be better punctuated by clever asides), or when you’re asleep (collecting dreams to tell when you awake), but when two or more people find themselves together, it’s better to talk. That’s how we show we’re being friendly. And that’s why we like to talk to strangers—especially if we won’t be with them long, such as in an elevator or on a bank line. This often makes non-New Yorkers think we’re trying to start something more than a conversation. Once, when I was visiting San Francisco, my friend and I stopped in magnetic thin thesis the street to look something up in her guidebook, and she complained that the book wasn’t very clear.

A man who was walking by ethics research, turned to us and said “Oh, that book’s no good. The one you should get is this,” pulling a guidebook out of his bag to magnetic film show us. I couldn’t resist checking out my hypothesis, so I asked where he was from. He had just flown in from New York. After we talked about New York-California differences for a few minutes, the visiting New Yorker suggested that we exchange our guidebook for the one he recommended, so we all went back to the store where my friend had bought her book a few hours before. In the bookstore, our new friend called over his shoulder, “Have you read Garp ?” I answered, “No should I?” “Yes,” he said, animatedly. To Admire? “It’s great!” Then I heard a voice behind us saying, “Oh, is it?” I’ve been thinking of reading that.” I looked around and magnetic thin film saw a woman no longer paying attention to research pregnacy us. Magnetic Thin Film? I asked her where she was from: another New Yorker.

Most non-New Yorkers, finding themselves within hearing range of strangers’ conversation, think it’s nice to pretend they didn’t hear. But many New Yorkers think it’s nice to toss in essays maya a relevant comment. Californians are shocked to have strangers butt into film their conversations, but they accept the essay, intrusion; they are shocked again if the thin film, stranger bows out as suddenly as he butted in. Complaining gives us a sense of togetherness in bad for adversity. New Yorkers have lots of ways of being friendly that put non-New Yorkers off, such as the way we ask questions. When we meet someone, we think it’s nice to show interest by asking questions. Thin? Often we ask “machine-gun questions”: fast, with an unusually high or low pitch, in a clipped form, and often thrown in right at the end of someone else’s sentence, or even in the middle of it. One conversation I taped, between a woman from New York (Diane) and a man from Los Angeles (Chad) who had just met, will show what I mean:

Diane : You live in L.A.? Diane : Whaddya do there? Chad : I work for Disney Prese—Walt Disney. Diane : You an artist? Now, anyone can see that something is wrong. Diane is doing all the touching the void essay, asking, and thin Chad is giving minimal, even monosyllabic answers. Technology Society Essay? He’s uncomfortable enough to stumble over the name of his own company. When I played the tape for Chad, he said that he felt under interrogation. But Diane didn’t want to ask all the questions. Magnetic Film Thesis? She was trying to show interest and ethics in social essay get Chad talking. She couldn’t understand why he was so unfriendly.

But, being a nice person, she kept trying—by doing more of magnetic film what was putting him off. The intonation, high pitch, and touching the void clipped form of Diane’s questions would have tipped off fellow New Yorkers: “This is a casual question. Answer if you feel like it; otherwise, say something else.” But Chad wasn’t used to thin film questions like that. Bad For Essay? When someone asks him a question, he feels he has to answer. So all that attention on him seemed pushy and nosy. Magnetic Thin Film? He was also put off by the speed with which Diane’s questions came at him. People who are not from ethics essay, New York often complain that New Yorkers interrupt them, don’t listen, and don’t give them a chance to talk. Typically, the film thesis, New Yorker starts talking before the research paper, Californian is finished, so the Californian, piqued, stops talking. So who’s interrupting? The New Yorker?

Not necessarily. Who said only film thesis, one person can talk at a time? In a really good New York conversation, more than one person is talking a lot of the time. On the tape of two and half hours of conversation from the void, which the Diane/Chad example comes, I had hoped to magnetic thin analyze the styles of all six people present, but there was no time when non-New Yorkers talked to one another without the New Yorkers saying anything. This happened mainly because the non-New Yorkers expected a certain amount of pause before they started talking, but before that much pause came about, a New Yorker started to think there was an uncomfortable silence, and a person kindly set about filling it up with talk. A short segment from that conversation—a discussion of the neighborhood around the Coliseum-will show this principle in action.

Kurt: Remember where WINS used to be? Kurt: Then they build a big huge skyscraper there? Diane: No. Where was that? Kurt: Right where Central Park met Broadway. That building… Diane : By Columbus Circuit. Kurt : …shaped like that [ makes a pyramid of his hands ]…

Kurt : …right on Columbus Circle. Here’s Columbus Circle… Diane: …Huntington Hartford museum. Peter: That’s the Huntington Hartford, right? For much of the above conversation, two or three people are often talking at the same time. But how I know that they thought it was a good idea?

When Diane suggests, “Now it’s the Huntington Hartford museum,” Peter says almost the same thing. But Kurt tells Peter and Diane they are both wrong. Film Thesis? How could they have made the essay, same mistake? Listening to the tape later, Peter admitted he really had no idea what Kurt was talking about; he hadn’t lived in New York since high school, and thin he felt very much out of his element in this conversation. Essays About? So, figuring that Diane ought to know, he just said the same thing she said, beginning a split second later so he could hear what she was saying and echo it.

The wonderful thing is that it worked: Everyone had the impression that Peter knew the area.
